OxyContin Thefts Hurting Communities

An invasion in your home would make you feel vulnerable and likely no longer safe within your own walls. If you have OxyContin in your medicine cabinet, you could be at risk of an invasion, especially if you large amounts of your possession is public knowledge.

According to a recent news report, homes in the Auburn area are becoming targets for break-ins. But that is the least of the worries within the surrounding communities. Reportedly, the high school’s welcome sign in Rocklin was altered so that it read simply, “Welcome to OC”, a reference to a nickname for OxyContin.

Placer County communities are finding the problem is spreading. A Folsom man walked in to a Walgreens in Granite Bay and demanded OxyContin at gunpoint. Hundreds of pills were in his possession when he left the pharmacy.

A home was invaded in Auburn when a cancer patient was robbed of her bottle of OxyContin – for which she had a prescription – by two men in ski masks and black clothing. The pills taken were of the highest potency of OxyContin.

These incidents are clear reminders that drug-driven crimes are hitting communities everywhere. Victims and perpetrators alike seem to have no known profile. Addiction to the painkiller is not found only in drug addicts. Addictions can arise in individuals who were taking the drug for medical reasons and under the care of a physician.

It is also important to note that not all thefts of the drug OxyContin are attempted by addicts as the pills are very valuable on the street. In fact, 80 milligram OxyContin tablets sell for as much as $50 to $60 on the street. In a time of a deep recession, that kind of profit can keep a family alive.
